How do you calculate percent variance?
Percent variance is calculated using the coefficient of variation (CV): CV = (standard deviation / mean) × 100%. Steps: 1. Find the mean. 2. Calculate variance and standard deviation. 3. What does percent variance tell you?
Percent variance tells you how much variability exists relative to the average. A low percent variance (e.g., 5%) means values are tightly clustered around the mean. A high percent variance (e.g., 50%) means values are widely spread. It answers the question: "Is the spread small or large relative to the typical value?" This makes it useful for comparisons across different datasets.
What is an acceptable percent variance?
Acceptable percent variance depends on your field: Lab testing: < 5% (high precision required). Manufacturing: < 10% for most processes. Business forecasting: < 15% is considered reliable. How is percent variance different from standard variance?
Standard variance is an absolute measure in squared units (e.g., cm² if data is in cm). Percent variance (CV) is a relative measure expressed as a percentage. Variance = 100 means nothing without knowing the scale; a CV of 15% immediately tells you the spread is 15% of the mean. Percent variance normalizes the measure, making it scale-independent.
Can I compare percent variance across different data sets?
Yes — that's the primary advantage of percent variance (CV). Unlike raw variance, which depends on the scale of measurement, CV is dimensionless. You can meaningfully compare a dataset measured in grams (CV = 12%) with one measured in kilometers (CV = 8%) and conclude the second is relatively less variable. This makes CV essential in meta-analyses and cross-study comparisons.
What is the formula for percent variance between two numbers?
For percent difference between two numbers A and B: % Variance = [(A − B) / ((A + B) / 2)] × 100%. This uses the average of both numbers as the reference. Alternatively, if B is the baseline: % Change = [(A − B) / B] × 100%. For a full dataset, percent variance uses the CV formula: (SD / mean) × 100%.
