What is variance in poker?

Variance in poker measures the statistical fluctuation in your results. Even with a positive win rate, short-term results can swing wildly due to the inherent randomness of card distribution. High variance means your results will deviate significantly from your expected value (EV) over short periods. Understanding poker variance helps you distinguish between bad luck (variance) and bad play (negative EV).

How does variance affect my poker win rate?

Variance doesn't change your true win rate — it affects your observed results over any finite sample. A player winning 5 bb/100 hands might experience stretches of losing 10 bb/100 or winning 20 bb/100 due to variance. The higher the variance of the game format (e.g., tournaments vs cash games), the more hands you need before your observed results converge to your true win rate.

How many hands do I need to beat variance in poker?

It depends on your win rate and the game's standard deviation. For online No-Limit Hold'em cash games with a 5 bb/100 win rate and ~75 bb/100 SD, you need roughly 50,000–100,000 hands to be 95% confident your results reflect your true win rate. What poker formats have the highest variance?

Tournaments (MTTs) have the highest variance because most of the prize pool is concentrated at the top. Sit & Go's have moderate variance. Cash games (especially full-ring) have the lowest variance. Within cash games, deeper stacks and more aggressive play styles increase variance. PLO (Pot-Limit Omaha) has higher variance than Hold'em due to closer equity run-outs.

How to calculate poker standard deviation?

To calculate your poker standard deviation: 1. Record your profit/loss for each session or every 100 hands. 2. Calculate the mean win rate. 3. Find each session's deviation from the mean and square it. 4. Average the squared deviations and take the square root. Typical cash game SD is 60–100 bb/100 hands. What is a poker downswing and how does variance cause it?

A downswing is an extended losing streak where your results fall below expectations. Variance causes downswings because poker outcomes are probabilistic — even correct decisions lose sometimes. A player with a 3 bb/100 win rate and 80 bb/100 SD has roughly a 20% chance of experiencing a 10,000-hand downswing at some point. Longer downswings are possible but less likely. Proper bankroll management protects against variance-induced downswings.
